Professor Kaibin HUANG, Philip K H Wong Wilson K L Wong Professor in Electrical Engineering, Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been honoured with the prestigious Croucher Senior Research Fellowship 2026 by Croucher Foundation in recognition of his outstanding contributions in 6G mobile communications and computing technologies at the sensor level. The award was presented at the Foundation Day Dinner and Awards Presentation Ceremony on December 8, 2025.
Croucher Foundation presented Senior Research Fellowships and Senior Medical Research Fellowship 2026 to three distinguished scholars in the ceremony. The awards represent the Croucher Foundation’s most prestigious awards, granted only after a robust selection exercise, detailed international peer review and long discussions between Governors. Each recipient of the Senior Research Fellowship receives funding up to HK$3 million to support their pioneering research.
The department is proud to congratulate Professor Huang on his distinguished achievement. His pioneering research not only advances the frontiers of mobile communication and computing technologies but also exemplifies the department’s dedication to innovation and academic excellence. We look forward to witnessing his continued success in the field and the enduring impact of his work on the global technology landscape.
About Professor Kaibin Huang’s Work
Huang has advanced wireless communication technologies from 4G to 6G, tackling key challenges in increasing data rates, extending network lifespan, and enhancing network intelligence. His work on efficient channel feedback for multi-antenna systems enables the systems to adapt transmitter waveforms to real-time channel conditions, which is critical for high-rate data transmission. These innovations have been incorporated into 3GPP standards and widely adopted by industry leaders such as Apple, LG, and Huawei. Recently, Huang invented Over-the-Air Computing (AirComp), a transformative technology that leverages the natural superposition of radio signals to perform distributed computations like averages and multiplications. Thereby, they overcome communication bottlenecks in 6G AI and machine learning applications. He has also contributed significantly to wirelessly powered communications and mobile edge computing, enhancing network longevity and computational capabilities. Collectively, his research has influenced the evolution of mobile networks and impacted both academic and industrial advancements in nextgeneration wireless technologies.
