Professor Shiming ZHANG’s Hydrogel Transistor Research Named Among China’s Top 10 Scientific Achievements in 2025

March 30, 2026

The department is proud to announce that Professor Shiming ZHANG and the Wearable, Intelligent, and Soft Electronics (WISE) research group from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Hong Kong have been named among China’s Top 10 Scientific Achievements in 2025 by Science & Technology Review of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). This prestigious recognition celebrates their pioneering work on the development of the world’s first 3D hydrogel transistors. The annual selection aims to highlight the top advances in science, technology and engineering, based on influential publications in academic journals and scientific media.

Breaking through the limitations of traditional rigid silicon-based electronics, Professor Zhang’s team innovated a “jelly-like” transistor that is soft, biocompatible, and capable of three-dimensional integration. This groundbreaking technology enables electronic circuits to integrate directly with living cells, opening new frontiers in wearable healthcare, brain-machine interfaces, and bio-hybrid robotics.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Professor Zhang and his entire WISE team for this remarkable achievement. Their success exemplifies our department’s commitment to leading-edge research that bridges engineering, biology and medicine, fostering advances in next-generation healthcare solutions.
