The Department is honoured to announce that Professor Felix F. WU, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been elected as a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. This prestigious recognition acknowledges his significant contributions to the development of analytical and computational methods for power system stability and security. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Wu on this well-deserved honour and his outstanding achievements!

Professor Wu is an internationally renowned scholar and educator. His distinguished career includes service as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at HKU from 1997 to 2000, Director of Graduate School from 1997 to 1998, and holding the Philip K H Wong Wilson K L Wong Chair Professor in Electrical Engineering at HKU in 2005. He served as Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at HKU and is currently an Emeritus Professor. He was also the founding Director of the Center for Electrical Energy Systems at HKU, Director of the HKU-Tsinghua Shenzhen Power System Research Institute in Shenzhen, China, and founding Director of the Friends of HKU, Ltd in the United States.
In addition, Professor Wu served as Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is now Professor Emeritus. His international academic engagements include visiting professorships at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH-Zurich), University of Tokyo, Università Degli Studi di Cassino, Tsinghua University and many other institutions. He has held prominent roles on the Editorial Boards of several professional journals and participated in numerous IEEE committees, including the Prize Paper Committee and the Executive Committee of Power Systems Engineering.
Beyond academia, Professor Wu has also contributed as a consultant to industry and government agencies worldwide, advising organisations such as Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the U.S. Electric Power Research Institute, the Chinese Electric Power Research Institute, ABB, Statcraft-Norway, Iberdrola-Spain, Manila Electric-Philippines, and Taipower-Taiwan. In 2011, he served as Chair of the International Advisory Committee for Strategic Development of Smart Grids Program of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan. He has held positions such as Board Member of Shantou University (2000–2003), Council Member of the Hong Kong Productivity Council, and member of the Hong Kong Government Electricity Appeal Board. He has been a Trustee of the Croucher Foundation since 2004. He is also a founding member of the International Institute for Critical Infrastructures, serving as its President from 2003 to 2005.
A luminary in the field of electrical engineering, Professor Wu is recognised for his transformative contributions to power systems research and practice. With an illustrious career spanning the University of California, Berkeley, and The University of Hong Kong, he has profoundly shaped the field. His pioneering work has revolutionised the theoretical foundations and systematic methodologies of power system stability, planning, and operation, providing essential tools that ensure reliable and secure electricity delivery in an increasingly complex power grid. Many of his developed approaches have been adopted in industry practice and have become standard material in contemporary power system analysis textbooks.
