Biography
Dr. Grantham K.H. Pang obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge in 1986. He was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, from 1986 to 1996. He joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 1996. Since 1988, he published more than 200 technical papers, and has authored or co-authored many books. He is the inventor of five US patents, one European patent, four Japanese patents and one Chinese patent. He is also a Scholar and Fellow of the Croucher Foundation, Hong Kong. Recently, he has acted as a Croucher ambassador to high schools to promote Science and STEM education.
He is in charge of the Industrial Automation Research Lab. at HKU. Dr. Pang was the Organizing Chair of the 1996 IEEE Symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design. He was awarded the ICI Prize for authorship of the best paper on the application of the theory of control published in the Transaction of Institute of Measurement and Control. He has worked as a Senior Visiting Researcher at Hitachi Research Lab. in Japan and contributed to vehicle navigation systems. Recently, he has helped AEON to develop an AI system for credit card application judgement.
On the teaching side, he has taught courses on Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, Control, Robotics and Automation, Systems and Signal Processing. He developed a course entitled “Fuzzy Systems and Neural Networks” and has taught it for twenty years. In recent years, new materials on deep learning model, Python and convolutional neural networks have been included.
Dr. Pang has acted as a consultant to many companies, including Mitsubishi Electric Corp. in Japan, Northern Telecom and Imperial Oil Ltd. in Canada, MTR Corp. and COTCO Int. Ltd. in Hong Kong. Dr. Pang is an Editor of the International Journal of Mechatronic Systems and Control. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, and a member of the IET, HKIE and IEEE.
