The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) have signed a Framework Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Early PhD Admission. This agreement establishes a structured pathway for enhanced research collaboration and advanced academic training between the two institutions.
The signing ceremony took place on 21 January 2026, during a visit by a BIT delegation led by President Professor Jiang Lan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The MOU focuses on cooperation between the School of Interdisciplinary Science at BIT and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the HKU.
Representing HKU, the agreement was signed by Professor Wei-Ning Lee, Associate Head (Research) of the Department of EEE, witnessing by HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang, JP. On behalf of Beijing Institute of Technology, Professor Chen Qi, Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Science, signed the document, witnessed by Professor Jiang Lan, President of BIT.
Following the formal signing, Professor Yang Lu moderated an in-depth discussion session. The dialogue built on prior exchanges, including the April 2025 visit by BIT Vice President Professor Wei Yiming, and explored further opportunities such as potential joint programmes and collaborative research initiatives.
This MOU underscores the growing academic ties between HKU Engineering and leading mainland Chinese institutions, paving the way for talented students and researchers to benefit from early PhD pathways, interdisciplinary innovation, and strengthened cooperation in engineering and technology fields.
